Influence of the Nectariless Character in Cotton on Harmful and Beneficial Insects

Abstract

Several years research in the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station at Mississippi State University have shown that the nectariless trait reduces the incidence of boll rot, tarnished plant bugs, fleahoppers, and bollworms on cotton plants. The nectariless trait will be an important component in the development of pest management schemes for the future control of these pests in Mississippi and other areas of the cotton belt. No major breeding problems have been indicated in the use of the nectariless trait; therefore, its incorporation into existing germplasms and breeding programs is receiving high priority.
