A Linear Model of Internal Tides in Sill Fjords

Abstract

Internal waves with tidal periods have been observed in fjords since early in this century (Zeilon, 1914). Recent measurements in Alberni Inlet on the west coast of Canada indicated the presence of large amplitude (∿10 m) internal tides in weakly stratified water of about 75 m depth (Dobrocky Seatech Ltd., unpub. man.). The model described here attempts to explain the generation and magnitude of these waves. The model will be described briefly and some preliminary results given.
