Agronomic Aspects of Potato Cyst Nematode Infestation
Abstract
Potato cyst nematodes, Globodera rostochiensis (Woll.) Behr. and Heterodera pallida (Stone) Behr., are present in most potato growing areas throughout the world (Evans and Stone, 1977). They seem particularly adapted to Western and Central European conditions. Despite a moderate population increase per season on susceptible potatoes, but because of a very small decrease of populations in the absence of host plants (only 35 per cent per year) infestations are long lived there. In many cases economically desirable rotations are not wide enough to prevent population increase and spread of the nematodes, a particular example being the short rotations customary in potato crops grown in the Netherlands for starch production. Potato cyst nematodes seem to do less well in the Mediterranean area, possibly because of a much greater population decrease in the absence of host plants (Mugniery, 1978). Also the USA has stayed largely free of potato cyst nematodes, which can almost only be due to adverse natural conditions; otherwise, how could it be explained that the beet cyst nematode spread to all beet growing areas in the USA.
