Dextran Hemopolymers as Model Systems for Biologically Active Proteins
Chapter
Abstract
A great number of model compounds for biologically active metal proteins has been synthesized during the last decade. Most papers focused on the development of systems which are able to form complexes with molecular oxygen.1–4 These investigations contributed considerably to the understanding of mechanisms of biologically relevant reactions, e.g. the reversible oxygenation of hemoglobin and myoglobin and the activation of molecular oxygen during hydroxylation in biological media and cells. The active centers of the proteins, which catalyze these reactions, are iron porphyrin systems.
