Abstract
Spasmodic torticollis (ST) (or a wry neck in the old literature) is the name given to a dystonic and hyperkinetic state of the musculature of the neck leading to distorted, pathological posturing and forced turning or shifting of the head. This disease usually affects the lateral neck muscles and leads to an involuntary twisting of the head to the side. If there is a predominant dystonia of the posterior neck muscles bending the head forcibly back, the disease is called retrocollis; if the head is inclined forward, it is termed antecollis. The laterality of ST is traditionally defined by the side toward which the occiput is turned.
