Fate of Plant Pathogenic Pseudomonads in Bean Microcosms

Abstract

Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae is a fluorescent pseudomonad colonizing plant surfaces and the causal agent of brown spot disease of beans. For this experiment a mutant with a single insertion of the transposon Tn5 in its chromosome (T12) was used. 4 x 109 cells were spray-inoculated into a microcosm with non-sterile agricultural soil and bush beans (cultivar Red Kidney). The persistence of the bacterial strain and its genetic marker was monitored. Our intention was to test the performance of the microcosm and to develop and compare methods for practical use in monitoring GEMMOs in the environment.
