Modulation of Extracellular Kynurenic Acid Content by Excitatory Amino Acids in Primary Cultures of Rat Astrocytes

Abstract
Kynurenines, i.e. tryptophan metabolites along the kynurenine pathway, have recently received attention because of their possible role in the immunocompromised brain and in the pathogenesis of human neurodegenerative diseases (Stone, 1993). In particular, high levels of the endogenous excitotoxin quinolinic acid and low levels of the excitatory amino acid (EAAs) antagonist kynurenate (KYNA) have been speculatively linked to the occurrence of seizures and nerve cell death.
