Abstract

Magnetic-reversal time lines of known age have been traced over a 15 km front of the Middle Miocene Chinji Formation of the Potwar Plateau in northern Pakistan, providing an example by which magnetic-reversal time lines can be used to measure stratigraphic variability in a fluvial sequence. The intrinsic lateral fluctuation, or nonuniformity, of sedimentation during early Chinji time averages 28%; vertical fluctuation, or unsteadiness of sedimentation, averages 41%. These fluctuations in sediment accumulation from place to place and from time to time characterize the fluvial system operating over the Potwar Plateau during Miocene time.
