Abstract

Normal eukaryotic DNA contain a family of genes termed proto-oncogenes thought to regulate normal cell growth and development (1). Expression of viral analogues of cellular proto-oncogenes in the context of acutely transforming retroviruses, is responsible for neoplastic transformation. Possible mechanisms by which viral or cellular oncogenes can cause neoplastic transformation have been recently reviewed (2,3). Since qualitative and quantitative alterations of oncogene expression can result in neoplastic transformation in experimental models, expression of cellular oncogenes in human leukemias is the subject of intense investigation. Recently we reviewed the role of oncogenes in human leukemias (4). In this review we focus on oncogene abnormalities in acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
