Abstract

The integer or rational quantum numbers that occur in quantum theory seem to be of two different sorts. There are those related to symmetry, and those that are determined by topology. The distinction is not necessarily an unambiguous one, and it may be possible to look at the same quantum number in more than one way, but there are certainly two quite different approaches to the problem of quantization.
