Abstract
It has been known for centuries that abnormalities in urine may indicate disease. The science of urinalysis has progressed greatly since the days of the medieval “Pisse Prophets” who, by visual examination of the urine, claimed to diagnose disease and see into the future. A carefully performed urinalysis using physical, chemical and microscopic examination offers very important information regarding the kidney. The results of any urinalysis depend on proper collection, preservation and careful examination. Numerous specific tests are also available for specific diagnoses when indicated by the initial routine screening tests (1–6).
