Facial Evaluation for Orthognathic Surgery

Abstract

The comprehensive management of patients requiring orthognathic surgery to correct dentofacial deformities has developed rapidly during the last decade.1 Technological advances in both orthodontics and orthognathic surgery have resulted in predictable treatment outcomes. The understanding that surgery compliments rather than eliminates the need for orthodontic therapy is an important consideration in planning comprehensive treatment for patients with dentofacial, as well as craniofacial abnormalities.1 By a combination of orthodontic and surgical interaction, optimal dental and facial aesthetics, as well as masticatory function, should be achieved. The first step in formulating a definitive treatment plan for surgical correction of dentofacial, maxillofacial, and craniofacial abnormalities is an accurate evaluation of facial aesthetics.
