Abstract
The removal of implants and cement can be exhaustive without proper instruments. A complete set of hand tools is an absolute requirement when preparing for revision surgery. The instruments are designed to facilitate the removal of implants, cement, and cement plugs. Several special instruments are required to remove most femoral components on the market. A hook extractor is designed for removal of Austin Moore type stems, whereas a one-piece universal stem extractor will effectively remove stems with a fixed head of up to a 38 mm diameter. A multipiece universal stem extractor is designed for removal of modular femoral stems with stepped trunions. A universal smooth trunion stem extractor is used with various size inserts designed to fit varying neck tapers to create a three-point contact that securely holds the trunion during stem extraction (Fig. 18.1).
