Management of Rectovaginal Fistulae

Abstract

A rectovaginal fistula is an abnormal communication between the epithelial lined surface of the vagina and the rectum, whereas an anovaginal fistula joins the vagina and the anal canal. Fistulae between the anorectum and vagina are relatively uncommon, accounting for less than 5% of all anorectal fistulae. The symptoms due to the fistula and the management problems it poses can be vexing to both the patient and the surgeon.
