Abstract
This lecture contains the heart of our treatment of the representation theory of finite groups: the definition in §2.1 of the character of a representation, and the main theorem (proved in two steps in §2.2 and §2.4) that the characters of the irreducible representations form an orthonormal basis for the space of class functions onG.There will be more examples and more constructions in the following lectures, but this is what you need to know.
