Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to describe the application of wavelets and wavelet-related ideas to the problem of the fast computation of certain integral operators. As with image compression, the success of wavelets in this application arises from the fact that wavelet bases provide a very efficient representation of functions that are smooth off a small set of singularities.
