The Internet of Things (IoT), also known as the Internet of objects or Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), refers to the networked interconnection of everyday objects. It is a novel paradigm that connects the pervasive presence around us of a variety of things or objects to the Internet by using wireless/wired technologies to reach desired goals. One of the most important design tasks of the IoT is described as integrating WSNs with the Internet. This chapter firstly introduces the concept of the IoT, then the design challenges of the IoT. Three ways of integrating WSNs with the Internet are then presented. Additionally, a service-oriented architecture of the IoT is described. Finally, a possible implementation in an emergency response application is given as a case study.
