Remote Accessibility Assessment System

Abstract

While home modification has come to be recognized as an important intervention strategy for the quality of life of people with disabilities, the availability of skilled professionals with experience in home modifications for accessibility is limited. A remote accessibility assessment system (RAAS) could enable clinicians to assess the wheelchair accessibility of users’ homes from a remote location. There have been many attempts to develop an effective RAAS. In this chapter, several approaches will be introduced, including the use of a survey instrument, videoconference system, 3D reconstruction system, robot motion planning technique, probabilistic roadmap planner, laser scanner, and quantitative measurement of accessibility. The RAAS could be applied to home and workplace, especially in underserved locations such as rural areas and islands. Research that applied several RAASs to diverse areas will be reviewed.
