Abstract
A European tobacco control conference was initiated to foster pan-European networking of professionals interested in tobacco research and policy, smoke-free environments, smoking prevention and tobacco control programmes. Over 500 delegates from nearly 50 countries participated in the ‘Smokefree Europe: Conference on Tobacco or Health’ in Helsinki, Finland, in October 1996. The Finnish Centre for Health Promotion acted as the conference secretariat. Financial resources for the conference were received both from national sources, such as the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, the Ministry of Education and the Finnish Slot Machine Association, and from the Europe against Cancer and Phare programmes of the European Union.
