Abstract

Sarcoidosis is a poorly understood granulomatous disease that involves the lung and intrathoracic lymph nodes in more than 90% of patients (1–10). However, multisystemic involvement is characteristic and virtually any organ can be affected (3,4,8–10). Skin, eye, and peripheral lymph nodes are each involved in 20–30% of patients (3,7). Clinically significant involvement of spleen, liver, heart, central nervous system, bone, and kidney occurs in 2–7% of patients (3,4,7). Asymptomatic involvement of these organs is far more common (3,4,7). This review focuses on intrathoracic manifestations of sarcoidosis, and only briefly discusses a few specific extrapulmonary manifestations that may be of relevance to radiologists. A comprehensive review of extrapulmonary manifestations of sarcoidosis is presented elsewhere (3).
