Observatories
Abstract
Most of the World’s great observatories now welcome visitors. Not necessarily to their actual observatory but to their virtual one on the Internet. In these days of public accountability it makes good sense for them to “open” their doors to the public and provide us with information on their facilities and research. We can visit the great observatories of the past and read about the next generation ones, and all from the comfort of our armchair. Famous ones like Palomar, Yerkes, Mount Wilson, Siding Spring and Jodrell Bank all have extensive Homepages. We will not be able to look through the great telescopes of course, nobody does these days anyway, but we can learn all about them and see their latest images. If you would like to visit them in reality then, where this is permitted, you can find out opening times and directions to locate them.
