Development of Charles Darwin as an Earth-Systems Scientist: A Field Experience

Abstract

Field experiences are essential in GSL courses. In the 1988 conference discussed in Chapter One, many of the scientists indicated their interest in science was stimulated by the beauty they found in nature. This fact provided the basis for formulating ESE Understanding One (See Table 1, Chapter One). So too should children able to experience the beauty of nature in their science courses. In GSL we emphasize the importance of incorporating the aesthetics of the Earth in science classes, perhaps not as a teaching objective, but at least in providing a context for learning. Certainly taking students into the field can provide that context. If in addition the teacher can provide experiences similar to those experience had by a famous scientist—field experiences that influenced that scientist to take on science as a career—then students will learn a bit more about why people become scientists and thus understand more about science itself.
