The Profound Problem of Locating Humanity: The Significance and Implications of Feng-Shui

  • David Nemeth

Abstract

In 1862, Thomas Huxley published his classic Man’s Place in Nature. In justifying the title and contents of this book, he wrote of a recurring “question of questions” for humankind; a problem “which underlies all others, and is more deeply interesting than any other.” He identified this problem as “the ascertainment of the place which man occupies in nature, and of his relationship to the universe of things.” An important corollary of this problem was “What are the limits of our power over nature?”
