Abstract
In every election politicians and journalists engage in a public search for the real issues of the campaign. They seldom succeed in finding them, often because they do not know what they are searching for: are they trying to identify the issues that, in fact, trouble most people? or the ones that should trouble most people? Are they looking for the issues that arouse the greatest interest? or, which may not be the same thing at all, the ones that have most power to get out or to switch votes?
