Abstract

In 1974, under the local government reorganisation, the former county of Glamorgan was divided up into three separate counties of Mid, South and West Glamorgan. At the same time, on the extreme northern boundary, a part of the former county of Brecknock became part of Mid Glamorgan. It is the larger of the three counties, containing the towns of Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda and Pontypridd, the main centres of the coal mining area, with Bridgend near the mouth of the River Ewenny on the edge of the fertile Vale of Glamorgan. Its northern landscape is that of the industrialised valleys but in the extreme north it overlaps the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, with the heads of the valleys leading towards its rolling hills, forests and reservoirs.
