In Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog Thomas for the first time reveals himself as an artist in comedy. Vernon Watkins has described how he

suddenly abandoned the highly charged, artificial yet impulsive symbolism of such stories as The Orchards, The Lemon and the unfinished fragment In The Direction of The Beginning at about the time of his twenty-fourth birthday.… Quite suddenly he began to write about people as they actually were and behaved.1
