Abstract
Christopher Smart was born in Kent and brought up in the north of England, where he seems to have fallen in love with Anne Vane, daughter of his family patron, Lord Barnard; she later became a visionary figure (like those in John Clare’s poems three quarters of a century later) under such guises as Hope and Constancy in his poem Jubilate Agno, written in the 1760s but not published until 1939.
