Abstract

As a collection of data, a database uses the concepts of data items, records and files in one form or another, and it employs the techniques available for their representations in a computer environment. The knowledge of these concepts and techniques therefore forms a prerequisite for a proper understanding of database technology. This chapter is intended to satisfy this prerequisite.
