The Changing Nature of the Modern British Family

Abstract

Industrialisation reduced the economic role of the family; parents and children can now rarely work together. Increasing educational opportunities have reduced this feature of family life still further; sons more rarely follow their Dad down the pit, or get fixed up at the shipyard through an uncle’s influence. The introduction of Labour Exchanges in 1909 had already reduced the need for such family patronage.
