Abstract

Lymphokines are proteins or glycoproteins synthesized by lymphoid cells upon stimulation by a variety of triggering events and which exert a messenger and/or mediator function in the immune system. This usual definition, however, is too narrow, since some characterized lymphokines have been shown to be produced also by non lymphoid cells and even to produce their effects outside of the immune system (Mizel et al., 1980; Schmidt et al., 1982; Fontana et al., 1982; Besedovsky et al., 1983; Postlewhaite et al., 1983), hence the more general term of cytokines. Indeed, it is increasingly evident that the biologically active glycoproteins and proteins produced by activated lymphoid cells have manifold functions, also on several other systems, like the brain and the neuroendocrine system.
