Abstract
From Gordon S. Haight, George Eliot and J John Chapman (New Haven, Conn., 1940) pp. 177–9. Chapman (1821–94), bookseller, publisher and journalist, was a freethinker and freeliver, and edited the Westminster Review (1852–94). Marian Evans, the future ‘George Eliot’, whose translation of Strauss’s Life of Jesus he had published in 1846, was his assistant on the Westminster, 1852–4. His 1851 diary mentions two encounters with Thackeray.
