Abstract

Most of the major American authors of the first half of the nineteenth century were in significant ways indebted to at least one of their British contemporaries. Together with Scott’s influence upon Fenimore Cooper and Coleridge’s influence on Poe which have been adequately discussed elsewhere, the relationships which this study has explored show that the influence of contemporary British authors was an important factor in the American Renaissance.
