Testing for SL Validity
Abstract
How are we to determine the validity of an argument from a most sophisticated SL argument consistency form that we have abstracted from it? The definition of validity suggests that the argument will be valid if and only if it is not the case that circumstances could be such that all of the SL forms in the. most sophisticated SL argument consistency form abstract true assertions. For if all of the SL forms could abstract true assertions, it would be possible for all of the premises of the original argument to be jointly true while its conclusion was false. Our method of attack in testing for validity will be to determine whether all of the SL forms in a most sophisticated SL argument consistency form for an argument can be regarded as abstracting jointly true assertions.
