Abstract

Brazil is the largest country in South America in area and population. It occupies nearly half the continent and has slightly more than half its inhabitants. It is the fifth largest state in the world and a country of great diversity and natural wealth, with vast, virtually unsettled spaces and untapped resources. With land boundaries that extend for 14,700 kilometers (9,100 miles) and a coastline of 7,500 kilometers (4,700 miles), Brazil borders all the South American countries except Ecuador and Chile. Brazil has boundary disputes with Uruguay and Paraguay. The preservation of its vast expanses of natural tropical rain forest, by far the most extensive in the world, is considered vital for the maintenance of global environmental quality.
