This first section briefly describes some of the chemical principles governing the composition of natural waters. We are mainly concerned with the short-term, diurnal and seasonal changes in the water of deepwater rice fields, rather than the long-term processes controlling the composition of the water entering the fields. For a more complete account of the composition of natural waters see Stumm and Morgan (1981).
