The Rivers

  • David Catling

It is essential to first consider the rivers and their associated landforms in order to understand the deep-water rice agroecosystem. The majority of water flooding deepwater rice fields either originates directly from rivers or accumulates from rainfall impounded on the land because the rivers are full. Deeply flooded rice in these floodplain and deltaic areas is usually no more than 10–20 km away from a major stream.
