Deepwater rice is an important staple food crop on about 9 million hectares of Asia and West Africa. It is mainly grown in the river basins of the Ganges-Brahmaputra of India and Bangladesh, the Irrawaddy of Burma, the Mekong of Vietnam and Cambodia, and the Chao Phraya of Thailand. Some is also found in the upper and middle basins of the Niger River in West Africa.
