Introduction

Abstract

The nature of the aggregate indicators on dimensions such as ethnic pluralism, language, urbanization, political patterns, and political instability in Part I is, in many cases, based on disaggregated information about individuals, events, populations groups, institutions or urban centers within each nation. Part II, therefore, consists of 41 chapters, one for each country, which give such disaggregated information. These data and the more extensive bibliographic references to each country can be used to evaluate the quality of aggregate date in Part I and, potentially, to construct alternative indicators. Each chapter contains eight parts: (1) country map; (2) summary of basic information; (3) ethnic patterns; (4) language patterns; (5) urban patterns; (6) political patterns; (7) national integration and stability; and (8) selected references.
