24-hour Variation in Synaptosomal Tryptophan-5-Hydroxylase Activity in the Rat Brain
Chapter
Abstract
It is well established that the concentration of 5 hydroxytryptamine (5HT) in brain tissue is subject to diurnal variation, with highest values occurring toward the end of the light phase (Scheving et al., 1968; Morgan and Yndo, 1973; Kan et al., 1977). The cause of this daily fluctuation is still unclear, although there is evidence to suggest that it may depend on the availability of the precursor tryptophan (Fernstrom and Wurtman, 1971) or on factors regulating the rate of synthesis.
