Pronase P resistant endogenous opiate-like acting materials
Abstract
Endogenous opiate-like substances, possessing significantly different properties from the known opioid peptides, have been detected in blood (Schulz et al., 1977a), urine (Goldstein and Cox, 1977; Schulz and Wüster, 1977), amniotic fluid (Schulz, unpublished), brain (Wüster et al., 1978; Höllt, unpublished), liver (Simon, personal communication; Wüster, unpublished), and small intestine (Schulz et al., 1977a,b). Interestingly, Pronase Por other peptidases fail to destroy their biological activity. This property, when considered together with analytical data previously reported, does not support the notion that these substances comprise opioid peptides. In the present communication data are given to further characterize these opiate-like acting compounds of unknown structure from brain and urine.
