Unesco and the Universities L’unesco ET Les Universites
Abstract
Ever since its foundation in 1946, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has dealt with higher education and institutions of higher education. As early as 1948 it initiated and helped to organize an international university conference at Utrecht, followed by another at Nice in 1950, which led to the creation of the International Association of Universities (IAU). The Secretariat of the Association is housed in offices placed at its disposal by Unesco. Unesco also maintains formal consultative arrangements with other international university bodies and with international teachers’ and students’ organizations. In order to develop and improve higher education, Unesco is engaged in a programme involving research and studies, conferences and meetings, regional activities and assistance to Member States, and public information.
