Abstract

Movements between individual lumbar vertebrae occur because of compression and tension on the intervertebral discs which lie between adjacent vertebral bodies. Schmorl and Junghanns (1971) call these individual areas “motor segments,” that is, the motor spaces arranged between the bony vertebrae. The motor segments that maintain their own posture through tension from the nucleus pulposus make up a single joint. The nucleus pulposus is the articular cavity; the anulus fibrosus makes up the articular ligaments; and the cartilaginous plates on the joint surface of the vertebral bodies comprise the articular cartilage.
