Abstract

Movements of the back, motions of the body and the load, development of intratruncal pressures and electromyography, and strength of the erector spinae musculature in lifting are reported by Davis, Troup, and Burnard (1965), Davis and Troup (1964), Morris, Benner, and Lucas (1962), Morris, Lucas, and Bresler (1961), Floyd and Silver (1955), and Troup and Chapman (1969), and are discussed in the literature which they cite. The practical reasons for studying lifting are to identify features which are potentially injurious, especially to the back, as discussed by Troup (1965) and Davis (1967), to make recommendations as to safe loads, and to recognize dangerous working conditions.
