Abstract
The First World War had struck the first blow at European hegemony in the world, causing weakened States, victors and vanquished alike, to seek collective strength in a League of Nations that would shelter them from further self-inflicted wounds. But the Depression and the assumption of power in some of these States of leaders who postulated the destruction of this shelter as a prerequisite to reversing the verdict of 1919 were fatal for the political, economic and social edifice of the Continent.
