Discussions of Mind and Philosophy

Abstract

Throughout Gertrude Stein’s writing career there appear echoes of her discourse from the years she was a philosophy major at Radcliffe. The intertextual relationship between her writing in fiction and poetry and the essays she wrote during the 1890s (as well as during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s) has seldom been investigated. While the disciplines of creative writing and philosophy today might seem clearly separate, in the categorization of turn-of-the-century educational divisions, they were fused in a number of important ways.
