Hemodialysis in the home and its impact on quality of life
Abstract
Home hemodialysis was first developed in 1963 in the United States and Great Britain to reduce the cost of long-term dialysis for chronic renal failure in order that the limited financial and other resources available could be used to treat more patients [1-3]. Home intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD) was developed shortly thereafter [4], followed by continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in 1976 [5] and then by various forms of continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) [6]. Today, CAPD and CCPD are the most frequently used forms of home dialysis and less than 1% of U.S. dialysis patients are treated by home hemodialysis.
