Human Cases of Hemorrhagic Fever in Saudi Arabia Due To a Newly Discovered Flavivirus, Alkhurma Hemorrhagic Fever Virus

Few studies on arthropod-borne viruses in Saudi Arabia have been published. One study on dengue fever confirmed the circulation of three dengue serotypes in Jeddah in 2001 (Fakeeh and Zaki, 2001). Kadam virus, an atypical tick-borne flavivirus, was discovered in Uganda and then isolated in Saudi Arabia from Ixodidae ticks, but so far has not been associated with human or animal diseases (Henderson et al., 1970; Wood et al., 1982). Other arboviruses, such as Sindbis virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, Rift Valley fever virus, Bluetongue virus, and Akabane virus, have been reported on several occasions. Because of the studies conducted during the last decade on a novel virus that causes hemorrhagic fever in humans, Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (AHFV) has become the most intensely studied arbovirus in Saudi Arabia. Nonetheless, many aspects of the ecology, epidemiology, and human and veterinary impact of AHFV remain to be determined and merit further study.
