The development of in vivo imaging technology in mice has been a powerful tool to study mechanisms of physiology and pathology in both the nervous and the immune systems. Recent studies have revolutionized our understanding on how glial cells, T cells and neurons interact with each other and respond to damage in the nervous system. This chapter aims to summarize the advances of in vivo imaging as they relate to microglial activation and present the challenges of utilizing this technology directly in animal models of neuroimmunologic disease.
