Abstract

Recent results on the molecular gas component in the central regions of galaxies are reviewed. Following the introduction, Sect. 2 discusses the most important tracers of molecular gas mass and describes the detailed spatial distribution of the dense molecular gas component. Sect. 3 summarizes our knowledge on molecular chemistry in external galaxies.
