Abstract
The control of technical systems is achieved by means of software and/or hardware. Some features of control systems are discussed like flexibility, reliability, effectiveness, speed, and transparency that lead to criteria how to balance hardware against software and how to design soft and hardware. Examples are given in terms of:
- i)
A computer controlled energy variation of the Bonn Isochronous Cyclotron, beam handling system, data aquisition, and kinematic compensation
- ii)
A computer controlled polarized ion source.
